    Frisbie's hospital-based EMS receives national recognition for its community services

    ROCHESTER — In 1981, Frisbie Memorial became home to the first hospital-based ambulance in New England.

    The hospital is currently contracted by the city to provide around-the-clock ambulance services.

    Frisbie houses three ambulances, and operates two between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., and one during the other eight hours.

  • Between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., the ambulance corps relies on additional help from Farmington, Milton and Dover fire.

    EMS is staffed with 30 people, consisting of 16 full-time employees, four part-time, and 10 per diem, or occasional workers, according to Frisbie Director of EMS and Preparedness John Levitow.

    There are two-person teams for each ambulance.

    Levitow said the ambulance corps is on track for responding to more than 4,200 calls for the year. That represents a 500 service call volume increase from last year.
